Lady Liberty beckoned as we flew by early this morning with her timeless message:

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Millions have responded to her call over the years and landed at Ellis Island to be processed and then went on to become citizens of the United States of America. They had little to offer but a commitment to pursue the dream of liberty. They came, they worked, they contributed their blood, sweat and tears to the cause and America became the greatest nation on earth.

Lady Liberty still beckons but the New York skyline has been decidely altered. Conspiously missing were the Twin Towers that met their demise on the fateful morning of September 11, 2001. I have visited the site several times--the first time when there was still smoke coming out of the pit. A second time when there was a ramp overlooking Ground Zero that was plastered with photos those that lost their lives in the towers that tumbled. Sobering indeed were those occasions.

Today when we visited Ground Zero it was deicdedly more hopeful. Cranes towered over the site where there once a pit. Steel and concrete structures are growing out of the pit and the sound of man and machine broke the otherwise quite morning hour. Much more needs to be done to "rebuild the future' as the WTC Progress website puts it, but it looks like after 9 years we are finally on our way.  http://www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress/index.html.

Gary on

When I was at Bihler, I was there almost every week end. The only place in the world you can go from a 4 star dining restaurant to the ghetto in 4 blocks. But I llike it.
