. We went to the deli - magnifient displays of fruit and all sorts of food. Raspberries and blueberries $5 for three punnets. PM back downtown to see a Broadway show. We saw Newsies a story about newspaper sellers in the 20's striking against the money hungry publishers Pullitzer and Hearst. The kids saw Aladdin. But before the show we wandered Times Square - a cacophony (?) of sight and sound. Millions of people! I will try to add a video. (Its on the phoe - haven't beenableto tranfer to tablet yet. Anyone know how? I have a little card reader that attachs to the tablet and i can take SD card from phone, but the HTC phone is a different story.) Caught a cab home which was quite reasonable. On Thursday am we did the first subway ride by ourselves (had detailed written instructions - walk down 96th to Central Park West, down the subway to the second level, and get a B train to 47/50 Rockefeller Plaza.) See? Ezy pezy! There was only one train to catch anyway. Went through the Rock..Plaza again, and saw all these guys sitting in a row in one shop getting their shoes shined! I thought they only did that in the movies! Had coffee at Starbucks while I uploaded to the Travel Pod site. I have learned to prepare a draft on the word app, and then upload for free. We wandered up and down 5th Avenue while avoiding potholes in the footpath. Roads are terribly potholed. What next? Big name clothing stores, jewellery etc. Helen wanted to wander through Tiffanys - rather posh and I held her credit card.) We had lunch at Trump Tower, but only at Starbucks
. Shared a turkey panini which was nice and a frappacino, or was it called a Frappachelli? But we DID have lunch at Trump Tower. Even used the toilet there! This marble finish everywhere, and gold coloured metal hand railings etc etc. What else? A Lego shop, horses and carriages at Central Park, pigeons snacking on horse food left overs. Then back to the hotel for coffee after buying a couple of Dunking Donuts. I chose mine fairly quickly, but Helen? Thats another story to be left untold - but the staff were patient. Tonight we have decided to eat Mexican just down the road, and then come back to upload and pack up for our departure early in the morning by train to Niagara. Back from Mexican - had our first margaritas and cactus salad. Just had appetizers and that was filling. Now have I forgotten to mention anything? Must check the last episode. Interestingly we saw only one lit stand in NY so far,and that was at the subway station.
Wont have much time Friday and Saturday, but will catch up in Boston. Sorry for the lack of pictures this time.
With warmest Christian greetings
John and Helen
Well this episode is for Wednesday and Thursday. But before I start I wanted to say that for those who have sent emails thank you very much, its good to hear from you. But it is unlikely that I will reply to all, so just check out the travel diary. Wednesday we all went downtown (hey getting the direction correct!) to the Rockerfeller Centre and the top of the Rockefeller Tower (they call it Top of the Rock) 360 views around New York. I was happy to keep away from the edge and took my pics from afar. The centre covers four city blocks, including the Radio City Music Hall. (Alison Krause and Willie Nelson there this month) Saw Rockfeller Plaza where they do the Today Show. Coming in from the subway into the centre, what looks like marble everywhere, but I am sure it must be synthetic. Lift up 68 floors in a flash, then you can walk to observation decks on 69 and 70. Helen and I had a quick look at 5th Ave while the kids did Greenwich Village. We all took the train back uptown (!!) - they walked through Central Park (saw a raccoon and chipmunk - envious because I wanted to see a raccoon while over here)
