We had no idea about this island before we arrived. We'd not really read or heard much apart from a couple of friends who'd stayed here for a week last year, so as we looked through our Lonely Planet on the boat trip across from Koh PP we became sitting ducks for the touts who try to sell you their accommodation before you even arrive. We took a chance and headed off in a 'free' taxi to a resort called Nature Beach. This is on Klong Nin beach, the West coast of the island. Nice big room and a hot shower - bonus!

First few days here were spent sussing out the beach, you know - making sure we hadn't blundered by choosing one that was too busy or anything! After two days extensive research we decided to get off our arses and do something, so we hired a motorbike and headed to the main port on the island, Sala Dan. Not agreat deal to see here, but we had a nice lunch in a restaurant over the harbour after a spot of shopping. After lunch and on the way home, we stopped at Phra Ae beach and had a cheeky dip in someone else's hotel pool (and a G&T, of course) and came back to Klong Nin beach for the sunset. The sunsets here are amazing, with so many different colours every night.

We took the bike out again the next day and this time Lou got to do most of the driving. We went to a Sea Gypsy village, where the people still live & fish in the same way they did 100 years ago. We also saw Old Lanta Town and unwittingly introduced ourselves to the local Chief of Police, who was here entertaining about 50 guests! Also in Lanta Town we paid a visit to the Hammock House, a shop where you can choose your hammock from a range of loads, but the best thing was that you got to try any and all of them out first.
On the way home we stopped at another beach (forgotten the name, we've seen so many!) for a read and a dip in the sea.
Unfortunately we've not been able to do any snoreklling or diving here, but we're hoping to dive again when we get to Cairns next month.

After 5 days or so at Nature Beach resort we decided to move out and ended up booking in to the resort next door - Lanta Paradise. Same price room, same beach, better food & service. Also a small swimming pool, for those moments when the Andaman Sea just doesn't cut it.
We're leaving Koh Lanta, and indeed Thailand (boo! hoo!), tomorrow and our next stop will be Penang Island, Malaysia. More from there.
