We broke Melbourne up between trips to Tasmania and the Grampians before heading to Queensland and New South Wales. But to tell the truth I could have stayed here and settled in until we made our way back home through New Zealand and the America's next year.
Melbourne is without doubt one of the most friendly, accessible and cosmopolitan cities in the world. Life here was made much easier thanks to my former flat mate and mental patient Leanne 'to posh for your own good' Tosdevin and her band of merry wino's, willing to drink themselves into complete social oblivion at the mere mention of "lawn bowls". For the sake of this entry we'll just call them 'the Ferrell's' (a local term often used to describe a pikkie).
We arranged to meet Leanne and 'the Ferrell's' at one of their locals in Port Melbourne on Saturday afternoon. Leanne has been enjoying life in Australia since she left Blighty nearly 4 years ago with a determined attitude not to let it change her. And one of the first questions she asked me on our arrival was 'Do you think I've changed?' 'Please say no Jonathan' she slurred as I peeled her off the floor. That'll be a No then!!!!
We decided to stay out in suburbia in a beach side area called St Kilda, which bristles with travelers, students and as many coffee and cake shops you could shake a boomerang at.
The weather in Melbourne is the topic of many a conversation. Like the UK and Europe, Melbourne enjoys 4 seasons, unlike the other Australian states. But it's not uncommon, even during the summer months (some suburbs had a white Christmas), to experience all 4 seasons during the same day. There's a big misconception, one for which I am also guilty of is that Australia is hot all year round. This couldn't be further from the truth. The reality is that when they have a summer, they actually have a summer and the weather reliably delivers with temperatures often seen in the mid 40's throughout the country.
Melbourne, like London, has a thriving live music scene with regular UK and international bands playing to sell out crowds. We've really missed seeing some live music and when we heard that London band Hard Fi were playing in St Kilda so we snapped up tickets and met up with all 'the Ferrell's' for another night of inebriation. Leanne left early as it's not really her scene prompting local Essex wide boy and head Ferrell, Dan, to say 'That Leanne, she's to posh for her own good'. The inspiration behind my title.
We loved Melbourne and in different circumstances would have loved to have stayed here longer than we did. It was great seeing you Leanne, thanks to you and all the guys for such a memorable couple of weeks. You haven't changed a bit..............................except for that ridiculous Ferrell accent you've picked up!!!
