Today we spent a very long day walking around Chemnitz being filmed by a cameraman for a German TV travelogue show called "Hin und Weg".  It literally means "towards you and away" but has a more idiomatic meaning of "being blown away".  So let me back up a few months...

In my quest to learn a bit of the German language, I watched a lot of german videos back home including a lot of video clips and TV programming from Deutsche Welle (German Wave) which is an official organization to promote German language and culture arounnd the world.  Every week, I would watch "Hin und Weg" which is a travelogue show that has features on places to visit in Germany.  Every week  they have a segment on the show where they film a foreigner in a particular town, showing their visit and the sights.  They always conclude the segment with [in German of course] "If you are visiting in Germany and would like us to accompany you with our cameras, please write us"; so I did and they did.

Our cameraman Holm and I have been corresponding the past week via email to discuss where we should film.  He suggested some sights in Chemnitz and also suggested we might like the exhibit of motorcycle history that a nearby castle has as an ongoing exhibit; the castle is a world famous meeting place for an annual motorcycle run that has taken place over many years.  It was funny too, because he didnt know Jerry was a biker.  Anyway, he met us at our apartment this a.m. and we drove into central Chemnitz.  He arranged with the tour bureau to have some one open up the "Red Tower" in the heart of the city (dates back to the 1200s) just so we could be filmed going up it.  We also walked around and had a traditional Saxon dish for lunch in the old city hall cellar restaurant (all expenses paid  by DW-TV which was a very nice unexpected pleasantry).  We had to do ALOT of takes where he would film us walking past something from various angles and of course we attracted various onlookers which was a weird feeling.  After lunch we drove to the castle Augustusburg where the famous motorcycle exhibit is (I didn't realize that Germany and Saxony have a very long history of motorcycle and vehicle manufacture).  We then drove around so he could shoot various angle of us driving our rental car past the castle up on the hill as a background and also walking around saying "goodbye", etc.  Lastly we visited the outside of the smallest castle in Saxony just before dark.  We figured we spent 9 1/2 hours doing all this but it was fun and we enjoyed talking to Holm and exchanging stories.  I had hoped to do all my speaking parts in German but I kept fumbling the words although he did film me having conversations with various Germans who stopped to talk to me.  All this for a segment that will last 4 1/2 minutes on the show.  Not sure when it will be on, but he is going to send us a DVD of our segment.  I have photos of the day to share...

Well, a few comments. I love the pictures of you and Jerry among the penguins, and the geographical information on that area too. Sounds like a fun and busy day there. You two will be reality stars before you know it. Just remember your friends in CA after you are shot to stardom. I also think Holm is cute. Is he single?

You missed another fun day under the big top. SOS. And I do mean S.O.S.
Calgon, take me away!

Would rather be boozing it up in a park looking at bronze penguins than at work these days!

Take care. Hugs to you both.

Too funny! I am REALLY enjoying no having a set schedule and not having to deal with anyone else's problems other than our own. If I ever won the lotto, I would just be travelling all over the world. Not missing home at all. Oh well, all good things end eventually. Thanks for keeping up with us on our little blog; start doing some vacation planning for yourself too; it's a good cure for work...

Obviously, I'm working hard today.

I am planning a trip to Vegas in a few weeks so looking forward to boozing it up there. No penguins to gaze upon that I know of but then again, they could appear magically. It is Vegas after all. Land of many possibilities. Counting down the days for that trip.

Well keep enjoying your time there. It's gonna suck being back here.
