The team started their first day of ministry in the Bomet area with a tour of Tenwek Hospital. This fine medical facility is the only hospital in the area and has been serving this small town and outlying rural community for more than fifty years. From what would be considered primitive by some (when compared to US hospitals), they have lived out their motto well: "We treat, Jesus heals" and have saved tens of thousands of lives and drastically improved the quality of life for thousands more.
After our hospital tour we progressed up, quite literally, to the Kenduiwo orphanage, which is a 45-minute uphill drive through scenic pastoral countryside
Several team members were able to move off and spend time just hanging out with the kids. During this 'free time' Karen was able put her nursing gift to use by cleaning and bandaging some of the more severe small wounds and infections. God is a great provider because she was prepared for this "unexpected" task by having simple first aid supplies in her bag initially meant for team members who might need them, but God knew all along that there would be needy orphans needing her caring touch.
Sarah, Pastor David's wife, prepared a typical but delightful Kenyan vegetarian lunch. Her hospitality and ample feast were a blessing after all the physical exertion at such a high altitude. We left at 3:15 for Tenwek since Kathy Rae had a physical therapy appointment for the persistent and painful neck and back spasms she has been suffering from the last couple of days. We're happy to report that she received some much needed relief and we are praying for her continued healing.
