Raechelle's 21st was one of the best days of my life (probably, oddly, better than most of the birthdays I can recall). We had a slow start. We’d bought the Champagne the night before (Moet) and it was freshly chilled for champagne breakfast. Bec and I ran out at the start of the day for a few fresh supplies. These included flowers (you’d be amazed given the three florists near the apartment how hard nice ones were to find), a large selection of tarts from the patisserie, as well as larger "birthday tart" (that sounds odd). We already had bacon-type-stuff and eggs, as well as toast, and the day started deliciously with a great group effort.
With a late start, we didn’t get a huge amount of sightseeing in. The main activity of the day was wandering from our apartment to the Notre Dame Cathedral. I can’t explain why it’s my favourite church so far in Europe. I thinks it’s the atmosphere, and probably (lets be honest) the gargoyles. It has magnificent views (you can’t go to Notre Dame without climbing the spires) and is just generally awesome.
We then went for a wander into the sixth and fifth arrondisement, largely so the girls could find clothes for dinner, which was a major flop so they headed back to Zara. I wandered on and explored the area around Sorbonne University, which was one of my favourite walks of the trip. The area seems to fulfil the intellectual French stereotypes offered in movies like Amelie and A Christmas Tale, with its tiny character record stores and book shops, interspersed with coffee shops. Its great.
The night finished with us all getting dressed up (I defend my jacket and black tie combo, even if Lou thinks its ridiculous), and lots of photos before heading off to the restaurant we had chosen for the night: Six New York.
Choosing this restaurant was one of the biggest decisions we made in Paris. Parisienne restaurants continue to be famously expensive, despite a significant tax cut in the middle of last year. We decided on this restaurant because of its amazing views of the Eiffel Tower, and the fact that it wasn’t too expensive (though, I think this is relative…). It was beautiful dinner, we had the best table in the house (in the photo) and Molly and I went all out and ordered the degustation with alcohol, which was delicious (though I can’t quite remember what exactly was in it…)
I'd also like to give a big thanks to Therese, who covered alcohol for the day, as well as Rae’s dinner. It allowed us to make the breakfast really special, and us to choose a really beautiful restaurant.
