The next day we arrived at the Moscow Central Train Station to board our SapSan high speed train for St. Petersburg. Trains are cool.... But way overpriced! The 4 hour trip costs $150 one way, while direct 1 hour flights only cost $100. But trains are easier to get on and off from, and if you want to get a glimpse of the countryside along the way, taking the train is the perfect option.

I sat down in my seat, looked out the window, and noticed what appeared to be dozens of cargo containers like you see on cargo ships all stacked up alongside the train tracks, AND THERE WERE PEOPLE LIVING IN THEM!!!! OMG! Maria told me they were illegal Tajiks (immigrants from Tajikistan) that were brought into Russia to work and are under the protection of powerful mafia types who pay off the government to keep them there. Crazy.....

The train is very nice, and very modern! Once we got underway we decided to head over to the dining car and enjoy a nice lunch. The food pictures on the front of the menu looked great, so I decided to order a sandwich. But what the waiter brought me a few minutes later was truly shocking. The sandwich looked like it was made by a 6 year old. I really couldn't believe it! And my so called sandwich, small can of Pringles, a Pepsi, and bottle of water costs an outrageous $15!!!! Still hungry I decided to return to my seat, but I couldn't get through the aisle because there was this really drunk woman who passed out under the seats and the security guards were trying to grab her LOL!

The trip to St. Petersburg was comfortable and I had plenty of time to check out the gloomy fall countryside along the way. We arrived in St. Petersburg after dark and made the mistake of taking the metro to our hotel RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR! And it was packed! I mean there wasn't one single inch of free space on the trains. I felt like a sardine!

We finally made it to our hotel which is located right in the center of the city. And with 3 full days of great sightseeing ahead we just decided to enjoy a good meal and get some sleep....
