Where I stayed
At last! I finally made it back to civilization. My first experience in Cannes was walking out of the train station and getting into a Mercedes Benz Taxi for my ride to the hotel. When the driver said they are all like that I knew this was going to be a great next couple of days.
After my hotel nightmare in Montpellier, I was very happy to finally arrive at my very nice hotel in Cannes. I picked this place because at $400/night (My Hotels.com price was $220) it was the cheapest in town. As expected I got a great room, with real pillows, several English TV channels including real CNN International, and even hot water! Plus the hotel even has real Mac computers in the lobby for guests to use, and a free hotel shuttle to and from the film festival!
Everything was going great until I tried to turn on their very high tech, centrally controlled, Siemens air conditioner. It came on, but did not blow any cold air. I couldn't believe it! (sigh) I knew there had to be something wrong somewhere. The technician tried to figure out what was wrong, but finally he had to wheel in a portable A/C unit to cool down my room. Problem was the thing was super noisy and with the price I was paying for the room, I was not happy. So, I went down and complained and they quickly offered me a better room with a pool view! The only problem was, that air conditioner didn't work either!! WTF? This place clearly has a problem with their entire A/C system, but there was nothing I could do. At least this room did fall within my very strict range of tolerable room temperatures, but barely.
After traveling all day I was starving so I walked down the hill to this great restaurant for dinner. The food was really good! I figured the next couple of days would be really busy at the film festival so I decided to just head back to the room to relax and get a good night's sleep.
