OK I've been eating the local European cuisine for over a week now and I have some thoughts.

It seems like overall the food items are generally fresh and taste good, individually. I think the problem is that these people have no sense of what tastes good combined on a plate. Now I know what you're going to say "You're in another country now John, that's how they eat". Perhaps, but that's probably also why all their local establishments are slowly being replaced by KCF and Pizza Huts. We all have the same tongues, and brains attached to them, and those taste signals all get processed roughly the same way.

This Morning before leaving Madrid I wend down for breakfast. I had a choice of several items at a kind of mini buffet including scrambled eggs, grape leaves, shredded carrots, cottage cheese, tuna, sprouts, corn, and of course who wouldn't want a pickle with that. WTF? It was as if you gave your six year old kid some money, sent them in the grocery store and said "Go bring back food". I mean really people? In their defense they did manage to offer butter next to the bread so it wasn't all bad. And they offered an excellent assortment of lunch meat and cheeses which is what I'm convinced the locals live off of because it seems to be the only thing affordable at the grocery stores.

But the biggest issue I have is with the temperature of food and drinks. What's supposed to be Hot is luke warm at best, and what's supposed to be cold, is usually about 2 degrees below room temperature. Nothing goes better with my cold scrambled eggs and sprouts than a nice glass of warm orange juice. And the bacon looked like it had been thrown in the frying pan for about 10 seconds, just enough time for the fat to start to melt around it. I finally had enough and actually made the waitress bring me some ice. Oh they have it, but they seem almost too lazy to bring it out. I can eat just about anything and I'm very tolerant, but I NEED ICE DAMN IT!!!!!

I was starring out the window at the Starbuck's Coffee across the street and almost said screw it and went over there even if it was going to cost me $7 for a cup of good coffee, but then I decided to give this automated coffee machine they have a try since it was included with breakfast. I've been seeing them all over town in just about every cafe. I guess making espresso the old fashioned way is being phased out around here. Guess what? It was REALLY GOOD! I would love to have one of those that's for sure, but they looked very expensive.

Keep in mind I'm on a budget, which is good because I want to live like the locals and eat what they eat. I'm told the average salary around here is 600€/month. I knew I was in the right place yesterday when I actually ate lunch next to the bartender who served me drinks the night before. I have not been visiting the higher end restaurants where the food looks amazing, but entrees like their famous Tapas start at around 20€. That's $30!!!!

OK, I'm off to catch my high speed train to Tarragona…..

John,
It would be travesty for European countries to be innundated with KFC's and Mickey D's!!!!... Great - now the whole world will be big fat asses like us Americans and they'll blame us.
