After spending 3 long days exploring the city of Albufiera by day, I finally decided to rest up and venture out at night. The city is divided into two sections, the old and the new. My resort is located right between them. The new section contains about a mile long street known as "the strip". No not like Vegas, but more like Cancun or Cabo.
There are people living and working here from all over Europe so it's really quite a clash of cultures. In one ear I here Portuguese and the other ear I here Russian, Dutch, German, and Italian. You never know who you're going to be trying to communicate with. And surprisingly, most of them speak very little English. Just basic words really, so talking to the locals is quite a challenge. I say surprisingly because most of the tourist who come here are supposed to be from the UK.
Apparently, here I am a rare traveler from the distant exotic land known as California and the only American for miles around. Well, that I know of anyway. My iTranz iPhone App is a big hit with the locals, and the 3D lens on my camera is quite the conversation starter.
One thing's for sure, the UK people LOVE Americans and could not be nicer to me. As soon as they find out I'm American and traveling alone, they immediately start buying me drinks and giving me advice of where to go and what to do, and what not to do. And as soon as I tell them I work in TV, the drink buying moves to shots buying and the conversation quickly turns to all about Hollywood. They can't get enough! One guy said "I ain't never drank with no Yank before. You guys are great!" And these guys can drink too, that's for sure. Since I didn't want to be seen as the "wimpy Yank" I had to do my best to keep up. Shots of Sambuca? Yuck! Honestly I don't see how they do it. I've got to pace myself…..
