John started his day with a cold shower at the campground and was ready to get the hell out of Dodge when he got back to our RV. What a windy day. As soon as John stopped shivering we blew out of Tusayan and headed south to Willliams. I thought we were going to blow over for sure. And it didn't stop until this evening. This place is in real competition with Green River for the windiest place in the states.
We stopped in Flagstaff to grocery shop and gas up. Flagstaff is a very pretty, small city, set in the pine trees. It seems to offer quite a lot in every venue. There certainly are many recreational opportunities and they offer a variety of arts also, of course, plenty of shopping options. A nice place to live it appears.
It wasn’t far down the road to Sedona and I do mean down. It is a windy, steep road down to the bottom of the canyon to get there. It is set in the tall pines also, but the red rocks are even more spectacular. However, to my disappointment, it was packed with people. There are very few places to pull off and enjoy the scenery and the road was very narrow. It was not a good road for an RV to stop on, so we didn't.
I would have liked to have seen some of the state parks, like Slick Rock and Red Rocks, but you had to pay at each one just to drive through and with all the people it didn’t seem worth it. The town of Sedona is a tourist trap, like most places with any special sights these days. It was not our cup of tea, so John just kept driving.
I thought it was a small town, but West Sedona is as developed as any small city, full of stores, restaurants, businesses, vehicles and lots and lots of people. We did drive off in the country to take some photos, but we had passed most of the great shots.
We ended up in Cottonwood and found Dead Horse Ranch State Park. It is a pretty big place with several different campgrounds. Then we set our GPS for the nearest casino and it was 16 miles away. So, we played the machines for a couple of hours and left with our pockets just a little lighter.
We had a great dinner of ribs and salad in our little home and went out later to see the full, bright moon on the horizon and the stars twinkling overhead. It was 84 on our thermometer when we got here today. But it is perfect right now, quiet, peaceful, cool.
Tomorrow we will probably head back north and stay somewhere around Flagstaff. It is an unplanned day and we will just take it as it comes. I hope you are all enjoying the moment and thankful for this beautiful gift of now.
