I set my alarm to wake me at 5:00 this morning but my internal alarm clock woke before that time.  I had a quick breakfast at the hotel. John was right on time at 6:00 and we drove out to the airport though quiet streets. We talked more about the current situation in the country, and lamented the fact that poor leadership on the part of one man could cause problems for millions. He also talked again about his home region. He told me that Kericho, the tea plantation center, and location of very pleasant colonial era hotel where I've stayed several times now looks like Somalia - there has been that much destruction. He probably exaggerated, but I was sad to think of such beautiful area being damages or destroyed.

He also talked about the rebels being inside Ndjamena the Chadian capital. There are conflicting reports about who's in charge at this time. So many countries in Africa are either in the middle of some sort of civil unrest or war, or are trying to maintain the fragile peace that follows such situations.

He also mentioned how many churches had been burned in Kenya, because the clergy was getting involved in politics and defending wrong behavior. I told him in was our policy to stay out of politics all together. We discuss moral issues and educate about destructive behaviors, but don't take political sides. John thought that was a sound position to take.

We talked all the way to the airport. On arrival he gave me a 15% reduction in the official fare because he said "you have been nice to me." He left me his card and offered to chauffeur me or my colleagues any time we needed it.

After formalities I headed to the Simba (lion in Kiswahili) Lounge, the business class lounge I get to use because I'm frequent flyer with Air France. I was supposed to have about 45 minutes here, before heading to the gate for the 9:00 flight.  When I showed up there about 8:15, I was told it was delayed due to bad weather until at least 11:30 perhaps later.

I spent several hours getting caught up on e-mail and other office work on my laptop, since there was wireless access in the lounge. How long would the wait last?

Hey Dad!
Well, you're finally getting home tomorrow, so I'm really excited about that! I don't know if you're going to see this before you do arrive or not, but I just wanted to say I'm happy I now understand why you couldn't contact us in the Seychelles and that you're safe and sound! Love you lots and have a great trip back!
