I've started another trip through French-speaking Africa. This trip should take me through Mauritius, Rwanda, (with a transit stop through Nairobi) Burundi, Congo, Togo (with transit through Benin), and Ivory Coast, before heading up to France for our annual Church festival.

There will be the usual challenges that come with travel through Africa, but a few also that I don’t normally face as well. Usually I have all the visas I need before I leave, but on this trip, for some reason the courier service I use to acquire the visas dropped the ball, and only got one of the three visas I need. They didn’t get me visas for Burundi or Côte d’Ivoire, so I’m going to have to acquire those on the fly, and hope I’m able to do so.

Marjolaine drove me to the airport yesterday, Thursday afternoon for my flight to Paris. I checked my suitcase all the way to Mauritius. The flight was overbooked, this flight is always full, and Delta was asking for passengers to give up their seats in exchange for money. I like to do that if I can, but I’m not able to do that at the start of such a tightly scheduled trip. We left on time for the seven hour flight and arrived a little early, at 08:00, in Paris. I was one of the first off the plane from coach class, and was able to zip through entry formalities and pick up my boarding pass for the flight to Mauritius, then I left the airport and took the VAL airport train to the Roissypole area and took a room at the Ibis, an inexpensive (at least by French standards) hotel which one can rent by the hour during the day. This gave me the chance to shower and freshen up, and get some work done on my laptop in reasonable conditions. I’ll have lunch and work here until after two in the afternoon then take the train back to the airport for my 16:20 flight to the paradisiac island of Mauritius.

Hi Joel,

Thanks for beginning another travel blog. You've already included a note of suspense with the missing visas. Will this be an adventure in patience? How convenient that you can rent rooms hourly at the Ibis. We'll keep you in our prayers.
