Flag of Portugal  , Northern Portugal,
Friday, December 31, 2010

A lot of driving, we passed a town called 'Cannibal' and agreed to not stop anywhere near it for anything.
Later on we came to Viana Do Castelo. They had a huge fortress there, and we had lunch on the ramparts before dipping into the huge rickety market. Portugal is cheap as it is, but a market is ridiculously cheap!

Later we hopped onto a cable car and rode up the mountain to the temple at the top where we enjoyed a magnificent panorama of the delta and town. When we came back to earth we wandered around some more and even stopped in a church called ‘Our Lady of Agony’ which sounds way more horrific than it is.

That evening was the end of 2010 so we both decided to pack it all in and just find a beach somewhere to enjoy it by ourselves as the new year was very profound for us as we planned our new lives for after Europe.
We came to a beach in near a town called Afife and we pegged down. The sun set over the ocean was like a big flamboyant flare saying goodbye to the year, and strangely to us and our trip. We had several other campers there and for some reason we got to talking to one of them; A guy from Aveiro who travels around in his blue transit van full of live snails. Yes, he drives around and sleeps in a van full of slithering snails. Selling them we suppose to restaurants… hopefully.

Later when it was well and truly dark we staggered down to the beach and set off the last set of Swiss fireworks. Kind of another reminder that things are moving on..
No one got burnt this time, perhaps we’re getting better with explosives.
A policeman was weighing us up from the parking lot as we celebrated, but unlike Australia, there’s nothing illegal about blowing stuff up, although as we saw him Joel forgot a cracker was still lit in his hand.. The boom was hilarious.

At midnight the coast lit up with the 12’o’clock fiesta in the sky. Joel woke Jena up to admire the lights.

In the morning it was January, and suddenly the looming realisation of home became real. So we decided to make an add to sell Bigwig on the internet. The whole morning was spent pulling all our crap out of the van in order to take 2 minutes of video and a handful of photos before everything had to be re-put back in it’s place. It was good to find some things that were lost in the van, ie. Joel’s headband (which is important…) as well as getting some decent cleaning done.
