Boxing day started with a bit of a kick in the crotch because as we drove out to Fatima we incurred a 33.50€ fine for not getting a toll ticket… ouch. No food for us this week!

Fatima was another interesting experience. We had been drawn to the little town because Joel had been interested in the famous prophesies, and we both love kooky stuff.
For those who are unfamiliar with the Fatima Prophesies, it pretty much goes like this: These three little kids in 1917 had several episodes where they were visited by angels and the Virgin Mary. They got told about WW2 and the fall of communism. Also a heap of gear about hell and stuff.

The place is like a mecca! We had no idea! We had thought there were lots of catholic shops in Oberammagau and Vatican City, but Fatima is bezerk!
The main complex is built onto the original site of the first apparition, and it is a huge courtyard connected by massive churches and monuments. Pilgrims were walking around on their knees and throngs of devotees were burning armloads of yellow candles in a big furnace. Some were burning wax symbols of body parts. In the shop you could buy these body parts, there was everything, feet, eyes, heads, babies, intestines and boobies. We wonder if anyone buys the boobs to keep and not to burn.

We visited the graves of two of the children in the basilica. This is such a very religious place, not like the Vatican or anything we have seen. These are thousands of real pilgrims. Very interesting. Not sure about the whole hell thing though.
