Apart from going to a place whose name includes the word 'penis' there were other (and better) reasons for visiting Peniscola, although admittedly the whole penis thing is pretty awesome.
There was this Peniscola book that Joel’s mum had in her toilet room that Joel seemed to have memorized from his time in occupancy that told of a beautiful white town on the coast, complete with… wait for it… SCHLOSS! (not shlong).
It seemed only appropriate to go there as most towns in Spain don’t seem to have as much of a deep-seeded history with us. And this one was the town from Joel’s mum’s toilet book. Go us.

When we first arrived we of course played frisby (or Freezeby as the case often is) on the beach, it hasn’t gotten old yet. But after sleeping through a night of sleeting rain, we ventured into the town to have a nose about. The weather was like a postcard, blue sky and toasty sun. If not for that it still would have been a great place to see, but it truly was another perfect day. Barely a tourists in sight.
The castle was built by the Templars on top of an Arab fort that already existed and has been the site a many wars and sieges. Really cool. Apparently the pope, Benedicto XIII (whom they called ‘Papa Luna’) lived here and built a lot of the structures, including his own personal papal basilica. It was cool that the whole town had been painted white and we spent a lot of time simply sitting in the sunshine like a couple of lizards.
