Much higher inland we made a bit of a long detour to a town we had eyeballed for ages, long before we began this journey, and it was just unmissable. Turns out we were so right because Carcassonne has to be the best Schloss town in all of France!
There are 57 witch hated towers that decorate the town and 2 layers of white stone walls that guard a whole other fortress inside.
In peak season apparently this place attracts millions. Blue planet says it can be a real downer to mix it with all the tourists in the narrow alleys. But for us the place was all but deserted, sure half of the shops had shut for the winter, but we got a free run of all the streets and ramparts. Every corner gave Joel a Schloss-gasm.
Later on Jena and Joel had a fight about how Joel uses the word "schloss" way too much. She said that she's tired of him using the word for everything, even when it isn’t castle related. Also that in towns like this, he can use it up to a hundred times per day.
Poor wife. Suffer the children.
Carcassonne is one of those stand-out castle towns that we think epitomizes the romantic middle ages. Its cool to know that it was also built by the Knights Templar to serve as a safe-house for pilgrims.
