We were reading in our blue book of all the cool towns that dotted the western coast and were suddenly determined to see a town called Viareggio, an old fishing town made popular in the 19th C as a kind of holiday destination for the rich and wealthy.
They also are well known as great Yacht builders.
When we arrived it was not a nice little town as we had thought, but much more of a poor unclean city in disrepair. We had a few navigational issues finding the CBD but when we did, we were very underwhelmed. But what made it great was a big long breakwall pier that sheltered the massive marina. We spent the afternoon watching the surfers and the big nice yachts. The water was filthy though because the last few nights had been hammered by torrential rain.
