Flag of Italy  , Tuscany,
Monday, October 11, 2010

We've settled down well as unofficial Tuscans now. At least we certainly feel lazy like real Italians are. But the food, wine and coffee lifestyle fits us just nicely.
We skipped only half an hour down the road to a town called Volterra. This unsurprisingly walled medieval town is pretty sweet. We snatched a free park amazingly outside the back gates and for several days picked around the town, looking at its ruins and shops. When we arrived in Volterra, we first noticed the huge castle, and for most of the time there tried to find out how to get near it. Jena noticed that there were no photography signs all around it, and it didn’t take long to discover that this castle is in fact a state prison. I wonder if they still use the rack in there?
How quaint, a lovely little old village surrounding a monstrous gaol. Way to go Italians…

Jena has been feeling unwell lately though. It may be the change of season. So lately we have been over exposed to lots of Harry Potter in Bigwig. We’ve also been sketching away in our pads and it feels good to be creative again now that we have the time. Although nights are getting colder still.

Volterra, we found out, like Montepulciano shares a secret shame. It too was used for Twilight filming. The little souvenirs and mementos everywhere are very gimmicky. But the Alabaster sculptures this town in known for is very impressive.
