After breakfast in the common room at our campground, we got back in the car and headed east towards the coastal town of Picton. The small two lane road hugged the coastline, giving us a dizzingly array of twists and turns that often dropped off sharply to the sea. Not very many guardrails... one must pay close attention as the consequences of a missed turn can be dangerous.
At Havelock we veered off the main road, opting for the windy road toward Marlborough Sound, amazed that the road was even MORE curvy and more narrow. That seemed impossible, but indeed, it was true!. The road follows the coast for the most part, though often trees obstructed our view. We went around curve after curve after curve... until we both were ready for a break. So when we saw the sign for Coffee and Cafe, we took the left turn to see where it would take us.
At the end of the dirt driveway, we found ourselves in a small spot of paradise, with lovely black eyed susans and roses and tall purple bunches of flowers beside an outdoor patio looking out at the green waters of Kenepura Sound. Two sailboats swayed in the breeze and gulls and terns flotated on the wind. We walked down to the dock, spotting schools of fish and jellyfish. After a coffee and piece of giant chocolate cake, we inquired about a room, thinking it would be nice to BE somewhere for the day and not do much of anything. The nicest lady took care of us, telling us about a wedding for the next day that meant she would upgrade us to the nicer room, keeping the cheaper price so the wedding party could still be together. Woo hoo! Another great bit of luck.
The room is so lovely, pure heaven. It is spacious and clean, with a huge living room area and then a giant bedroom, both looking out a wall of windows facing the bay. Gold! We will spend the day relaxing, reading, taking in the view and doing nothing more than enjoying the day. It is wonderful to be in one place and not be rushing off to somewhere else.
...hope you are somewhere lovely too.
(Enjoy these pictures that we liked but that never got into the blog in the right place ... they are the MISSED PICTURES!)

Wow, I was really confused for a minute about where you are! The travelblog pinpointed "Picton" in Ontario, Canada.....lol!!!! There must be a town there with the same name as NZ :). I can't believe your amazing trip is coming to an end, and I can only imagine how you guys must be feeling...but then you are so fortunate to have had this experience! See you soon, Deb
Thanks, I feel that I am with you on this trip. Very much enjoying it. Would love to be there in person. One of my dreams.
Stay safe.
Jack
Bring Peppy home with you!
Joe...great pics..! Have a great time, look forward to more.
I was enjoying looking at the map (what a neat feature or this site!) and noticing that you did an amazing job seeing some of the most beautiful spots on the South Island. What an adventure your trip has been! I am so glad you got a chance to go and enjoy the gorgeousness and wonder of New Zealand! I look forward to chatting when you return! Safe and pleasant journeys! :)
I wish you could have been here to help me with the legendary fish that are supposed to be here....I tried several times and only caught my usual average size guys; but I met a couple of Englishmen on the Greenstone river and they had photos of 6 and 8lbers that took 20 min to land on 4X tippet. Wow that would have been a thrill!!!
Hi Jack
I think you would really enjoy the dramatic beauty of this country. I miss playing golf with you guys...I guess you'll be back in town after the Masters as usual?
