We arrived in Arthur's pass and found it both cold and windy; but the train ride to get here was gorgeous with snowcapped mountains in the distance.  As we approached them we passed through one alpine valley after another and marvelled at the pale blue rivers and lakes coursing through them.  Sheep grazed along the creek banks and in the fields and some scampered away as we rumbled past.
After stowing our gear in the motel, we grabbed our poles and cameras and headed up the mountain along the Bridal Veil track.   It was a beautifully moss covered forest track without a lot of distant views; but was very reminiscent of a cloud forest in Costa Rica or the Pacific Northwest.
The sky was constantly changing from blue to grey to sprinkles and back again as we walked along the path....and a path it was.  Almost all gravel with nice wooden steps wherever there was a hill to climb.
It was too windy today to do Avalanche Peak trail; but we hope to try it tomorrow.

Wish the Jeep and I were available for this trip. Nancy and I did 16 days in New Zealand ten years ago and fell in love with the country. The birds are interesting but you haven't seen New Zealand until you have identified the Big 5 in Trees! Best to the two of you.
P.S. We, Nancy and I not the Jeep and I, will be in China from April 11 till about June 8 if you want to meet us there. Yes, we will be traveling with binoculars and a bird book.
