The Crocodile Bridge and the Scarlet Macaws

This is our first chance to see the coast of Costa Rica. We drove down out of the mountains towards San Jose and then on towards the long coastal road that follows most of the Pacific side. There are still mountains along the coast; but now we saw coconut plantations and some farms along the mile or two between the hills and this sea. Here the water is decidedly blue and so far it is very flat....not yet a surfers destination. We were trying to get to the Parque Manuel Antonio but we were quickly running out of daylight and this was really too lovely to miss by doing a night drive so we decided that we would look for a place and wait until morning to continue our drive when I suddenly recognized the bridge and the river we were crossing....it was the crocodile viewing bridge and it is where we saw the Scarlet Macaws  when I was in CR before.  We stopped to look and sure enough it was full of huge crocs just waiting for something to drift their way.  We were too late for the macaws so we found a room and returned the next morning just before dawn.  What a birding hot spot!   We saw the Macaws, Wood Storks, an American Pygmy Kingfisher, Roseate Spoonbills, Crane Hawks, a Black Hawk Eagle, an Amazon Kingfisher, white Ibises, Fulvous Whistling Ducks, Black Neck Stilts, N. Jacanas, and all from the comfort of the bridge.  Now it is on the Isla Ballena....an island shaped like a whales tail where we hope to do some snorkeling and look for Humpback Whales. Along the way, we also saw a Gray Hawk and a King Vulture so the birding continued to be good. We stayed at a hostel called the Toucan Lodge in Uvita and had a nice time watching the sun set. Dinner was yogurt, peanuts, left over pizza, cookies and Baileys Irish cream. Now that is one fine backpackers dinner!
