The morning is grey, cloudy and rainy
as I hang a wreath of flowers on a spirit house near the river
market. The moon lover cafe is a beautiful and comfortable riverside
place where I find the inspiration to write a couple chapters of my
book. A regular patron asks me about the grand canyon because he
notices the name Arizona on the back of my shirt. It is a shirt that
I had made for my previous company, Arizona mountain Electric Inc.,
and I am glad to meet someone who speaks English to have a
conversation with. His name is Nui and was recently touring America
where he visited the Grand Canyon. He said that he had purchased
several route 66 souvenirs for his restaurant and he was excited to
know I used to live a mile away from old route 66 in Parks, AZ. He
invited me to come to his restaurant in Ubon anytime. I enjoy a
western style ham and cheese croissant with green tea and Japanese
honey. After my morning writing session I set out to explore Ubon by
walking. I see many temples and many Neens or boy monks. I find a
temple with giant carvings made from bee's wax many rustic natural
wood creations. I find Nui's 'Rung Roj' restaurant and he gives me a
lot of extra food for free and cuts my bill in half. Very nice guy! I
make another flower offering and check out the U bar and the laser
surgery place on the corner, in case I want to look ten years younger
for $50. I try to be a responsible drinker and limit my intake of
beer as I sit by the river's edge in the evening, tapping keys to
create my first novel, and observe that small red ants have taken up
residence in my computer. The street that my hotel is on has many
interesting smells such as local rice whiskey called w ya dong that
has ginseng in it. There are many Chinese herb smells, incense
smells, grain smells, powder smells, sewer smells, food smells, and
Buddha knows what I smell like from walking around sweating all day.
