Funky Taos, and a lot of Prairie

Ok, first I need to back up on yesterday's blog.  I missed a chance to go for laughs with the picture of Tufie at the Aztec Ruins.....the caption should have been "Two Ancient Ruins".

Second, I forgot to attach a picture of the amazing Rio Grand Gorge Bridge, so it's included here.

So...we wandered around Taos.  Man, the architecture is distinctly funky, the people are clearly left over hippies from the 70's, the streets are designed to bash all side view mirrors, and , I'm guessing here, it's probably the liberal bastion of the US, maybe the world, given the number of artists, gallery's bead shops, native art, etc.  I'll bet if I yelled "BUSH" on the main drag, I'd be stoned to death in less than 45 seconds.  Sigh.

So after Taos, on Route #64, climbing again, to another 9,100 ft peak, then whooshing down the backside.  This constant up and down is getting old, baby, but then it opened up when we got to Texas, to the prairies with waves of grasses as far as the eye can see.  Occasionally dotted with working oil rigs, and some cattle, saw nutin'.

Stopped at the only state park in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to Vietnam veterans.  This has to be one of the most emotional place on the planet, even if you're not a Vet.  The story and pictures are heart wrenching and it tears at your soul that we were involved in such a useless, stupid, wasteful, idiotic war that expended many of the lives of our youth.

Did a lot of stopping at historical markers, discovering that we were on the Pony Express trail all day.  We also went through three Indian reservations, clearly delineated by shit everywhere.  Oops, sorry, politically incorrect.

Anyway, no blog tomorrow or maybe the next since we're going to the Meredith State Park, not far from here that's on a huge lake, and pretty remote, so we're going to hang other there, since we're ahead of schedule.
