We got the bus to Ubud, which took only 1.5 hours.  When we arrived we went to a restaurant for lunch here we were asked to it with a Western gentleman.  Given that he was the only other customer it seemed a bit rude to say no.  So we began conversation, which went something like this.

Stranger: Where are you from
Alex: England
Stranger: Oh, I got a letter from England a couple of days ago.
Alex: Really?
Stranger: Yes.  To tell me that my mother had died....

..Silence, tumbleweed.

He eventually went on to say that he was from England but had left in 1966 and had not been back since 1973 and that he would not be going to his mother's funeral because he had got used to living in the tropics and it would be too cold.  What a guy.  After some more chit chat in which he made remarks about his belief in his being close to death we paid for our food and made a swift getaway.

Ubud itself is a relatively small town surrounded by rice paddies.  It is quiet and made a refreshing change from Kuta.  Our hotel was amazing, with our room set in a garden with a pool.  We arranged a days cycling tour to see the surrounding countryside, all apparently down hill.

The cycling was fantastic, although it did involve some quite fierce uphill sections, and we were able to visit various farms and see people harvesting rice.  A real eye-opener, which makes you realise how hard some people have to work to get by.  After an amazing lunch we visited the local monkey sanctuary and it was back to relax at the hotel.  Next stop Lovina..
