February 3rd, 2010

Leaving Will's after a wonderful meal, Darcy and I drove together with Andy following in Crazy Fish, we talked about life in Brewster so many years ago.  Darcy then told me of the many activities she has discovered for us to do in our two day visit with her in Estero.  Her enthusiasm makes her the Ambassador of Tourism Extraordinaire!!!  She has arranged with the management at her and Bill's condo to let us stay overnight in their Club parking lot near the tennis courts.  Fabulous!  We had a light meal and off to slumber we went.  Sweet set up!

February 4Th

The day started early here at  Grandezza....the parking lot filled up with tennis, golf and exercise advocates all infectious with their energy and high spirits.  Andy and I woke up, shook off the cobwebs with a good blast of espresso and got ready for Darcy to join us.  She took us into Grandezza for a terrific class in Pilates centering on "back flexibility".  Oh yeah....we needed that!  Susan, our instructor was very knowledgeable and was full of pep and fun so the class was not only useful but was super fun too!!

Feeling great!  we all changed clothes and headed out to see the sights!!  Over the two day visit we took in the King Tut exhibit visiting the Florida Museum in Ft. Meyers, had a terrific lunch at the nearby "Oasis" that boasts the friendliest personnel around and lived up to their claim!!  As we walked in and began taking our seats, we hear a friendly "hello, How are you?" yelled from across the room.  At first not realizing it was for us....the welcome came again and our hostess nodded in our direction to give us the heads up that it was us that were being addressed.  We all fell quickly into the atmosphere and became one of the family right away!  After our meal while coffees and teas were being brought, the owner came over and gave Andy a neck and shoulder rub while telling us her story of 21 years here sharing good food and good cheer to the folks who come in.  It is an "Oasis"!!  We also went to the Edison Estates where Thomas Edison figured out 1093 inventions that earned him patents.

His estate property gardens were his laboratory for plants and energy while researching rubber and latex as his inside labs were his support for his research.  An amazing man with amazing stories.  Darcy is very good at getting the docents to tell all!!!  We learned about the 'Man' rather than just the inventions.  We learned about Mina his second wife who was very instrumental in his life style and inspirations.  A story worthy of mention was told as if it were happening that week.  Thomas Edison had two sons who at the ages of 11 and 14 were in a friendly competition with their dad for fishing.  Mr. Edison had not yet caught a tarpon and was very driven to do so before his sons.  On a morning bright with sun and a bit of wind Mr. Edison took his boat out leaving his sons on shore to fish from their 1500 foot pier saying that there wasn't enough room as it would be today he would catch the famous Tarpon!  The sons, disappointed but recovering quickly, went about netting mullet to use as bait and got their lines in the water to try their luck for whatever was biting that day.  One of the sons, I am not remembering which, felt a slow tugging on his line.  As the line was being drawn out slow and steady, he assumed it was a crab and began bringing it in to detach the crab and re-bait.  When......zing went the line and the reel as the bait took off into deeper water.  The kids fought and fought to bring in whatever this was!  At some point the excitement increased as a mighty Tarpon jumped high in the air and did a tail walk on the water!!!  After much struggle they landed the Tarpon to then hear their Dad shouting from his boat as he came back in, that he had caught a Tarpon!!  Once ashore he proudly showed off his 10 pound Tarpon to his sons who then produced their 100 pound Tarpon to him!!!  both are hanging on the walls of the house to this day!

Thomas Edison's friendship with Henry Ford and other amazing men of that time made the stories even more interesting.  To think about these men enjoying each others company while influencing and supporting each other to reach higher levels of imagination and invention for the betterment of our modern world.  So many of their patents were combined energies and support.  All while they walked the grounds that are still preserved for our pleasure today.  Beautifully done.

As always, the time flew by.  Darcy was a fantastic hostess with her "activities center" rivaling none, and her meals and thoughfulness all creating a wonderful visit.   Andy I thoroughly enjoyed our time and the sights we saw!!  Now on the road to get to the Keys and hopefully some kayaking and fishing in the sun.  Great visit with Dar!!!  as always!!
