Got a two hour boat ride over to the island of koh rong, a tiny island with only limited accommodation. As we and many others on the boat had not booked anything beforehand there was a bit of a dash getting off the boat, struggling with our backpacks and wobbling along to the nearest beach hut.

Our aim was to get a place right on the beach and we did it. We got a $15 hut right on the beach at Monkey island, it was very basic...made of bamboo with a straw roof. We had shared bathrooms and showers but we were pretty happy with it!

It's a pretty incredible place really, especially when you think there's so few people on the actual island at a time and the majority of the island is completely uninhabited. Theres no leccy, just from 6 till 12am when the generator is on... Theres plans to build an airport and resorts on koh rong so it's great that we got to experience it like this..

That night we met an Aussie girl called Kelly and a couple Ed and Katie, we'd already made friends with the bar staff and one of the managers was from Stockport so befriended Jo! A cambodian who worked there kept us entertained with games at the bar, we even managed to conquer the game he thought was impossible, getting a lighter from underneath an empty whiskey bottle without touching the bottle. We did it first time! Resulting in a free cocktail.

Then we went for a skinny dip, standard! If you move really fast in the water at night (I can't really remember the science behind it) but something like the plantain reacts with your skin and gives off this fluorescent green light. Something we had to put to the test. And it worked! It was amazing and to add to it there was a storm over at sihanoukville so we could see huge lightening storms in the sky too.

Unfortunately when I got back that night I was sick. Sick all night and felt like crap the next day so spent it in bed..don't know what it was but I was convince it was monkey islands kitchen so we moved next door to the much plusher Paradise bungalows. With an amazing bar and our own toilet and outside shower it was a treat, the huts are all pretty basic but it was a relief to have my own toilet! We spent the next day snorkelling and walked through the jungle to another beach. It was even more beautiful than the main beach, the water was actually like a swimming pool! Only downside about the water here is there are tiny jellyfish that sting you, just feels like a pin prick but it is a bit off putting!

That night there was a huge storm! Thunder and lightening like I've never seen before! It was well scary and we hardly slept mainly because of the noise!

We loved koh rong and paradise bungalows, bar restaurant was great with great Khmer food and really chilled out..however it is pretty hardcore just because its so basic and after 4 days we were heading back to the mainland.

Back to Sihanoukville, but to stay at Otres beach, which is supposed to be more of a relaxed, chilled out place.
