This is the first update for a while, in the main part because we haven't been doing very much - other than sitting on the beach for the last few days. We're now on a small Island called Gili Trawangan which is near the Island of Lombok, in turn near the perhaps more familiar sounding Indonesian Island of Bali. When I said small I actually meant minute - the Island measures about 1 1/2 by 1 kilometers. It's been our home for the last three days after we waved goodbye to India with heavy hearts having had a fantastic time.
We got here via a flight to Kuala Lumpur and a short hop to Bali. From there we caught a speedboat to the Island. All we saw of KL this time round (we're flying back there in a couple of weeks) were the Airport and the hotel. What an airport though! Not ordinarily the kind of thing to get my juices flowing, KL airport is such a modern wonder of both architectural and efficient magnificent that we actually went back there for dinner and an evening stroll rather than eat in our hotel. I'll post some photos next time we are there. We'd had a bit of an embarrassing moment earlier in the day actually; after we arrived in KL we hung around waiting for our "free" shuttle bus to the Empress Hotel. Following an hour wait, and indignant at the lack of vehicle, we jumped in a cab – cursing as the journey got longer and longer (the hotel website had said it was a three minute journey). About twenty dollars poorer we entered the lobby of the Empress hotel. The pleasant Malaysian lady behind the desk asked Kanan to email them our booking as she couldn't find out name. Kanan sat on the internet as requested, and the lady then disappeared trying to find out booking. She came back ten minutes later and was about to feel the full force of my rage, when she pointed out (very politely and without laughing) that our reservation was for the Concorde Hotel. We then paid another 20 dollars for the taxi back to the Concorde Hotel (which incidentally WAS 3 minutes from the airport and DID have a free shuttle bus).
Anyway, we've rather put that all behind us now having spent the last three days relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, diving (Kanan only), eating and drinking (mainly me - makes up for the cost of diving). It's a stunningly beautiful Island - surrounded by clear blue sea and wonderful diving and snorkeling. Only today I was sulking in the morning when Kanan saw sharks, a number of turtles, eels and cuttle-fish. However in my late afternoon snorkeling from the beach I too swam with four turtles, saw a Moray Eel, and yesterday saw a shark. Remarkably, I've seen more from the beach snorkeling than I have from the boat when I’ve accompanied Kanan on her dives to various sites off shore. Accompanying her has given me a unique insight into the crazy/zany/whacky world of dive-instructors though. As a consequence I think I’ll give the dive boat a miss tomorrow.

On our first night here I experienced my first monsoon, you can see in the pics below that we didn’t quite time our escape from internet café (outside which we waited for about an hour whilst the rain poured) and home (about 200 metres away) very well. In fact it stopped raining just after the pics were taken.

The Island of Gili Trawangan is almost deserted and we’re enjoying a post-India tranquil hiatus, and quite frankly we’re not sure how long we’ll be here for. We haven’t really planned the remainder of our trip at all, expect that we’re flying back to KL in Malaysia in 10 days. Not much other news to report really, just relaxing and errrr, Kanan had bought a new hat….

Hi Kanan and Joe,
You both look like you are having the time of your lives and look soooooo happy together it is wonderful to see.
Deb says a big hi and sends lots of hugs your way but as she is - in her words - a 'Techno Numpty' - she could not send the message herself! she is jealous about the cricket - she is making do with the somerset 20-20 matches, doesn't compare really does it!?!? altho, she is going to the open golf again this year!
Brian also asked me to send a huge hello and hopes you are well - he asks if i've heard from you frequently - he sends his love to both of you.
All the therapy team send their love and kind wishes to you and hope your travels continue to be so exciting!

Me, i am fine, making cakes as ever - Reece is being baptised on sunday so lots to do for that and i'm learning to do sugarcraft so that is exciting too - so doesn't compare to your wonderful travels! I have ejoyed reading Joes entries, he is very comical and it makes for good reading!

Miss you Kanan, look forward to reading more soon!

Lots and lots of Love from Jojo x x x x x
