Greetings from sunny California! This is the first entry of what I hope will be many as I circumnavigate my way around the globe. And what do you know - they've even got the internet in California home to the Silicon Valley, Google and all things technological, so here goes...blog entry no. 1.
I landed in San Francisco on Monday afternoon about 1.45pm. The landing strip is right by the sea and at one stage I actually thought we were going to have to slide down that escape chute as the Pacific loomed into view a few feet below the plane's wheels. But that pilot did us proud - and that's probably why he OR she is paid so much.
I could tell straight away that I was gonna like Frisco - it's a town made up of tall, blonde joggers
But the best thing about this place, I've discovered, is the Mayor. After spending the best part of three years enduring pictures of arthritic old Test Valley Mayors at the Andover Advertiser, being surrounded by pictures of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is like a blessing. There was an article about him in the SF Chronicle today and he's just been on the news as they are having Bay Elections here today. I shall have a Google image search and post a pic. Someone told me today that he's the town's most eligible bachelor as he's just divorced his wife. I wonder if he's attending any cheque presentations in town in the next few days?
I spent my first evening in SF on Alcatraz Island doing the audio tour and enjoying the view of the sunset foreshadowed by the Golden Gate bridge.
I spent all of today doing a tour of the city - the farmers' market at the Ferry Building followed by the boat to Sausalito - cruising past Andre Agassi's pad - then a trip across the Golden Gate Bridge, the Japanese Tea Gardens, Chinatown, Grace Cathedral, Lombard Street and so much more that I'm actually too knackered to list now.
And speaking of mayors, am looking forward to going down Highway 1 tomorrow to take in Monterey and Carmel - the town Clint Eastwood was mayor of for two terms. I suppose that's a return to arthritic, old mayor status just with a wee bit of botox thrown in for good measure.
