Our Australian room mates from Faro were going to Morocco and tried to inveigle us to come along. But Jacqui and I wanted to go back to Lisbon and see if we could manage it better (viz not end up on streets unable to communicate). So we got the train back to Lisbon (much better) having *first* arranged a place to stay. Admittedly it was looking over a square where they were holding the world accordionist champs but still ... well done us. So we arrived, negotiated our way flawlessly to our pensione, cleaned ourselves up and headed out for dinner. The Rough Guide (which I had taken to referring to as some sort of modern prophet) recommended Barrio Alta in the evening so we climbed a million stairs and found ourselves in one of Lisbon's oldest beerhalls. It used to be the dining hall of a monastery, apparently, but now it is all given over to sins of the flesh. They serve steak with egg on there ... that happens in Portugal, we don't know why. And we were very pleased with ourselves after that so we decided to head for a bar recommended by the Rough Guide ... which we could not find.

But we did find another bar and we ordered cocktails in Portuguese.

And then on our way back to our virginal beds at the pensione we found a *huge* street party. And we made lots and lots of new friends there. Hmmm, yes. There are no photos of that however because this is not that sort of web site. But we were fending off admirers all evening ... not as it happens particularly successfully.

But anyway despite our hangovers the next day we went to Sintra and saw castles and palaces and also a very cool toy museum. We were perfect tourists. And that night we went out to dinner where the waiter -- called rather disappointingly Gil -- loved us although did not give us free *anything*. We had port after dinner. It was nice. Quite sweet.
