We had a lovely, lazy day today.  We started out way too early in the morning, George and I still a little ill from food poisoning (damn you, raw moldy ham! Why must you be so delicious?), and rode a few trains to get from Florence to Ravenna.  Ravenna is a small town, not as impacted by tourists as some other areas of Italy that we have been to.  It's rather lovely.

After checking into our hotel (where everyone is MUCH nicer than at our last hotel, for barely more than half the price), we started out our day in Ravenna with a lunch at Ca di Ven.  For those of you who have been to Haufbrauhaus, it reminds me a bit of that, only instead of German with lots of beer it's Italian with lots of wine.  Also, none of the staff spoke a lick of English and I had forgotten my dictionary, so that made it even more interesting!  Luckily I was able to translate poorly enough to get everything across (even asking for her recommendation for wine, I was proud of myself for that one).  Then there were noms.

So you go in and most people sit at one long table.  Since we were only 2 and didn't speak much Italian, we were sat all by our lonesome over in a corner, but that was fine with us.  In Ravenna, one of their specialties is a certain type of flatbread called "piadina." Oh so yummy.  So we had sandwiches with homemade piadina (they cook the dough fresh for each sandwich), as well as some piadina with rosemary for snacks, and a bottle of some amazing Sangiovese (the region Ravenna is in) wine.  Yes, we had wine at lunch, but everyone here seems to do so.  Hush you.

So after overeating and drinking too much wine, we found a little park to sit in for a bit, had some ice cream, and went to see Dante's crypt.  Yes, the same Dante of Dante's Inferno.  Then we returned to the hotel for naps.  Oh such a rough day, I know.  After naps, time for more food! We walked around for an hour or so first, investigating different suggestions, then decided on a place and decided to eat like the Italians seem to eat.  Every restaurant we have been to, it has been expected that you have an appetizer, then a pasta, then a meat, then a dessert.  So we made it part way.  We split an appetizer, then a pasta, skipped the meat (although it smelled AMAZING) then on to dessert. NOM.  And way too much food.

So here, it seems that wine at restaurants can both be good and inexpensive.  Our entire bottle of wine for lunch? 12 Euro.  Our half bottle of wine at dinner? 6 euro.  And both (although especially the lunch wine) were fabulous.  What you would expect to find for $30-40 in a restaurant in the US.  I'm going to miss that...

Tonight is our only night in Ravenna.  Tomorrow, to Venice!

It has been! And we recovered rather quickly, so we still got to enjoy everything else.
