On arrival at Vancouver airport we opted to get a Taxi over the shuttle bus for simplicity. The Bus cost $14 per person and this estimated Taxi fair was $35. This proved a rather costly mistake as the Taxi driver had no idea where our hotel was! The problem was that our hotel was only three months old and so the Taxi driver had not heard of the hotel. Luckily we had our mobile phones with us and where able to download directions.
We arrived at our hotel (the L'Hermitage on the corner of Robson and Richards) and checked in
Once we had freshened up we decided to head out into town. Our first stop was the Vancouver Look Out, located with the Harbour Centre. The lookout stands at 130m (430ft), providing stunning views over downtown Vancouver, the Coastal Mountain range and the Georgia Staright.
From the look out we headed to Gastown the oldest district in Vancouver, founded in 1867 by 'Gassy' Jack Deighton. The cobled Water Street is the main road through Gastown and truely adds to the character of the area. The main atraction in Gastown is the Steam Clock, orignially built to cover a steam vent. The clock, has four whistles and sounds them every quarter of an hour.
At the top of Water Street is the Steamhouse Brewery. We decided to stop for a drink and a bite to eat. The food was good value and plentiful and the beer from the micro brewery was exceptional. One slight downside to this area is the number of homeless people begging for money while you eat.
After dinner and one or two beers, we headed back to the hotel at around 20:00 local time or 04:00 London time, for some much earnt sleep!
