You may have noticed that I am writing and publishing entries a wee bit after actually staying in the place... which I guess is not good practice, especially as iīve given up on my hand written journal! Because of this, I am currently in the process of trying to catch up with my blog writing before boarding our flight to Bolivia today... two more entries to go, including this one. I have to admit, that I am also trying to keep up with goodie too-shoes Kris, as she has set the standard of only being one destination behind at a time! In order to achieve my goal, this is going to need to be a short entry as i dont have a lot of time left; plus writing doesnīt come easily to me and it is way too hot and early in the morning (7am) to be anywhere near creative!
Caraiva was a lovely, charming little fishing village that we visited for a couple of days. Itīs pretty remote so getting there was fairly entertaining - a very bumpy, dust filled bus journey from Ajuda lasting around 2.5 hours, then a small river boat crossing. The village has no cars or tarmac roads - transportation basically involves the use of ones legs or a horse and cart... which really adds to the character of this place. Thereīs not much to do here other than explore the surrounding countryside and enjoy the gorgeously empty beach...Kris and I opted for the latter as it was way too hot to do anything remotely energetic.
On our first night there, the village was having a community movie night - it was so amazing.... kids, parents and grandparents all sat out on the sandy street watching a movie (a kids animation film) being projected onto a large, portable, roll down screen which was positioned on the edge of the river. The night was perfectly clear with a full moon casting a beautiful reflection over the river, which then flows out past the sand dunes into the ocean - it was spectacular! I wish I had got a picture - though I imagine the locals probably wouldnt have appreciated a flash blinding them whilst they were watching their movie!
Due to its fairly remote location, accommodation and food were pretty expensive - the knock on effect of this was that Kris and I lived off variations of Brazilian style hamburgers as it was the cheapest food we could find - by the end of our stay, I was sick of burgers, even with the bizare combinations usually involving sweetcorn and peas! I also cant help but wonder whether the meat came from the skinny, anorexic cows, Kris was so shocked to see on the way out there!! he he :)
From Caraiva we headed straight for the big smoke city Salvador... this was one mammoth journey which started at 5am and ended the following day at 9.30am. The journey involved:-
* one small river boat crossing
* a 2.5 hr bumpy, dust filled bus journey back to Ajuda
* another river crossing on a much bigger boat (plus meeting a smoulderingly hot brazilian traveller now known as Petrobras Man)
* a short taxi ride (we couldnt find the bus stop to take us to the next bus station)
* an 8 hour wait at the bus station in Porto Seguro
* 13 hour night bus to Salvador
* 1 hour bus journey from the Bus station to our hostel in the old city!
Right... next entry Salvador xx
