We have met so many wonderful people and we know that people come into your life for a reason. At the Refugio Ciclista we met a hard working group who provide a refuge for so many by preparing a wholesome meal at a very reasonable cost to travellers, their villagers and those that pass by and come upon them completely by chance. I thank them for taking the time when things are very, very busy to greet us with a smile and a nod. For remembering I like white wine. We wish them success.

At the Reserva Wine and Tapas Bar in Ponte Delgada we met Bruno Antunes who is trying to make a success of his new bar. Serving Tapas is a "Spanish Thing" and will take time for the residents to catch on to his take on "Portuguese Small Bites". They are delicious! His menu illustrates the history of all of these small bites, all DOP, meaning Denomination of Protected Origin, a respected certification from a specific region. Like here, in Canada, he is asking everyone to eat "local".

Then there is Lily and Claudio the couple who own Cucina Italiano who are introducing a little bit of Italy to the Azores. We had fun here, out of the rain, a leisurely delicious lunch but lots of laughs. For some reason they took a shining to me (Tony had to translate), apparently they loved my facial expressions....eventually the conversation came around to the question, how long have you been married? After hearing forty years the comment was to Tony..."You are a fortunate man because without a strong woman this would not be. It is the woman that keeps a marriage together, I am sorry , but this is true". Again Tony had to translate and they loved that he had to tell me that. We wish them well, talk about strong, they have the strength to start over in a new country.

Fabio, the cutest young man who checked us in at the Pousada, toured us around, who we saw everyday and he checked us out. He is just starting his career and he will do well. As we were leaving and everyone and I mean everyone came out to say goodbye, he said "We have a secret to tell you". We of course asked what it was. Fabio said, "We have been told that we are being inspected, as the hotel is hoping to receive another designation and when you and Mr. Limina arrived we thought it may be the two of you who were inspecting. We have all been talking about you."  We chuckled. We asked when did you realize this was not the case? The reply from one of the dining room staff  "I told them, I do not think so because when I see them at dinner, they speak and ask about me." They thanked us for our time, but truly, they did not need to share this story but they did. We all laughed and understood the common thread between us...we were wondering and asking about all of them, just as they were wondering and asking about us.

We did come home to more snow than when we left but I think or dare to, that spring may have followed us home and is on its way. Water is running in the street.

I am thankful to you for sharing this journey with me. Again I have appreciated your comments and the time you have taken to read what I know can be long winded. We look forward to seeing our friends and extended families who also have stories to tell. Right now we are home safe and surrounded by our family, our grandchildren Nia, Ruby and even Baby Foster were excited to see us. It could not be better.

Until,

Janie

So great to read and keep up with your travels, but even better to have you home! Maybe one day we can retrace your steps and experience those thriving businesses!! Thanks for sharing.

The essence of travel is turning everyday routines into a new and exciting experience. I delighted along side as you discovered Portugal and I even shared your stories with our Portuguese staff members. They also enjoyed, as their families are from the Azores and Porto! I am adding Portugal to my travel list, thank you for sharing.
