Colonia is lovely. A luxurious 3 hour ferry ride (BC Ferries could learn A LOT from BuqueBus) and we arrived in what I can only describe as the most adorable town. Ever.

With only one night booked at a hostel, we set down our bags and took off exploring. Up to the top of the lighthouse with a lovely view of the surrounding areas, we were sad to realize that the camera batteries were dead. We officially have no proof, but you'll just have to take my word for it: lovely. A view of the old city walls, the old gate, the central plazas lined with flowering trees and coffee shops, the river that goes forever, the docks and marina. Needless to say, after 10 days of hustle and bustle in Buenos Aires, I was in heaven.

We also managed to try chivitos, which is a Uruguayan specialty that doctors cannot be overly fond of. When I say heart attack on a plate, it's only scraping the surface. A chivito for 2 was a massive platter half covered with french fries, half with potato salad. On top of this was piled a bed of lettuce and a few slices of tomato (the healthy portion of the meal). On top of that, two thin steaks, fried with layers of bacon and ham on either side, topped with melted cheese and fried eggs. Sorry arteries!

Our one night reservation quickly turned into two, and our first night was spent at a hostel bbq with a lot of wine, two amazing Irish men, some grappa con miel (they don't claim to have invented grappa, they leave that to the Italians. They just claim to have made it better!) The chicken was the best I'd ever had, and like most things in South America, our 9pm dinner was closer to 10:30 when it was ready, but totally worth the wait.

Day two was more wandering, this time with sunscreen on. We covered much the same ground as the day before, snapping away with a fully charged camera. Lunch was a picada in the cutest little corner cafe, where we had some amazing wine and delicious food. Colonial cheese infused with basil anyone? Or perhaps some mystery cheese (the result of an attempt at parmesan gone awry) covered in homemade balsamic vinegar? We left fat and happy, yet again.

An afternoon relaxing, some gnocchi for dinner (the 29 of every month is gnocchi day) and we were all ready for our next stop: Montevideo.
