( To be read aloud as with a "bush poem" )

The Road to Montevideo

It dawned cold and grey, the day we set out
On The Road to Montevideo

People on the bus had their heads down,
quiet – except for one young gentleman,
who had rather a lot to say for himself
but no-one could understand him,
'cause he was only 6 weeks old,
On The Road to Montevideo

All of a sudden,
bus swerves onto the verge,
driver jumps out, what's going on ?
Seems the missus warned him,
don’t forget the bread rolls from Pablo’s stall
apparently that’s the way things work,
On The Road to Montevideo

We’re in the hurly burly of the city terminal,
best grab a taxi before someone grabs you
have to be on your toes when you reach the end of the day
On the Road to Montevideo

Check-in at our digs,
sort of place those down on their luck end up in,
the girl on the counter don’t want to be there,
can’t blame her after seeing the room
we expected better after travelling,
On The Road to Montevideo

Hungry, we take to the street,
find a grill run by a decent bloke name of Anton
he reckons we should come back the next night
a tango milonga being the go
that’s a night out the locals look for,
On the Road to Montevideo

It’s a strange old town, and we’re not too taken,
but one place stands out the Uruguay Carnival Museum
the  costumes confounding the mind with colour and sparkle,
photos showing the spectacle of the parades,
we are left in no doubt that Carnival time, is the time to get,
On The Road to Montevideo

Milonga night and we’re having a ball – dancing, clapping
there’s an old bloke and his lady tearing up the dance floor,
looks like people stay young,
On the Road to Montevideo

The weekend rolls by, and we need to move on
having a date with a girl called Rio, as in De Janerio that we don’t want to miss
pack the swag, swing up the bag, lets end this story
On the Road to Montevideo.
