This September, Samuel Breuer is packing his bags and heading to a beautiful city near the Rocky Mountains called...Calgary!! He will be working with an organization called Youth for Christ (a good friend of ours, Brian Carnduff, is also a part of this ministry), and helping kids/young adults on the streets in downtown Calgary get back on their feet. He will also be discipled in leadership skills to be used back in his home town and wherever else God might lead him. Samuel's ministry in Calgary will last until August 2013. But right now Sam lives in a little town near Dusseldorf called Hilden, with his 16 year old brother David, his mother Gina, and his father Andreas. We know this because we had the priveledge of being their couch surf guests for three nights. The way this came to be is kind-of a long story, but it all started with an Austrian stamp. We will have to save this story for when we get back, or Samuel can tell it when he comes to Calgary.

When we first got to Hilden we put our children on our backs and got the iPod maps ready for our usual new town trek. But, Gina and Andy were standing hand-in-hand on the train platform waiting to drive us to their home. Never before have we felt so much like family so quickly as we did with the Breuers. Samuel was out for a bit the first night so he asked his mom and dad to pick us up and look after us till he got back, and they did a wonderful job. The six of us enjoyed relaxing (it had been somewhat stressfull the last two weeks for the Breuers) and getting to know each other over some very tasty meals and card games. David especially enjoyed the new card games we taught him. Sam and David were delighted to find out that the Hearts card game we taught them was the same game that comes on the computer. We also enjoyed Andy's wonderful piano playing. Andy used to play the piano for a living, but also plays whenever he feels like it at home. We had our own private jazz and classical concerts all throughout our stay. Gina was delighted to have another woman in the house. She makes very elaborate cakes in the shape of things like purses, that can only truely be appreciated by another woman. She made Jessica a cake in the shape of a purse with Jessica's name on it and the reaction Gina received from Jess was just as exciting to see for everyone as the purse.

On Sunday, we all went to Sam and David's church. It just so happened, that particular Sunday, they were having a special service in German AND English run by an American missions team. The American team had come for a couple weeks to help fix up a donated apartment flat for new immigrants to Germany. With help from many of the new Moroccan immigrant kids, they helped turn an old dingy disco club into a colourful games room for the kids. We were able to meet a lot of the Americans and the kids living in Sanheide and hear their stories when we went to a big BBQ on Saturday. It was encouraging to hear what God was doing with His church elsewhere in the World. On Sunday, we also went to Dusseldorf to see a French Festival that was going on. David and Sam and their friend Jan showed us around Dusseldorf. We stopped by to get some gelato and doners that Sam had been raving about. We must say, they did live up to their hype!

We had a wonderful time with the Breuers, and we hope to be seeing them again in Calgary when they come visit Sam.
