We could hear only the sound of women beating laundry on the concrete steps of the ghats at the lake shore as we ate breakfast.  After arriving about a quarter to nine and making our way to the relaxing Panorama Guest House via auto rickshaw, we sat in peace and quiet, staring out over the lake and the city palace.

While stuck in Siliguri a couple weeks ago, I had seen the Rajastan maharaja's car collection featured on a travel show on the Discovery channel while we twiddled our thumbs.  As a car nut and the son of a car fanatic, I had to go see it.  After a tour of the city palace, amazed at the opulence past maharajas must have enjoyed, then some mediocre lunch at Lotus Cafe, we walked the mile to the maharaja's car collection housed at the Garden Hotel.

I enjoyed the museum.  There were about 20 cars in well used daily driver condition...several Rolls Royce's, a few Mercedez, a couple Cadillac limos, a Buick, a 50s Austin sedan, a pair of Ford GPW's (WWII jeeps), a model A, a couple 40s era Chevy trucks, and two Morris Minors.

Three things amused me.  One, two of his Rolls Royce's have been converted to safari trucks.  You know you have money when you convert your Rolls to a truck. Two, of all these cars he's choosing to slowly restore, he first chose the Model A and the Morris Minor.  Three, he's an avid MG fan.  His beloved MG TC was not on display because he keeps it at the palace for regular use.  He proudly displayed his MG Owners Club certificate.  Dad, I think you and the maharaja would get along great ;).

Maharaja's museum
Well sure! I've actually read quite a bit about that place, and maybe I saw the same Discovery Channel deal? Those are really old Morris Minors . . . called 'Low Lights' . . . 'causes the headlights are mounted so low. They had to raise them later for safety and better visibility. Yeh, he must be great guy!
