Packed our bags and walked to Avis to collect our rental car, then on the road to the Silver Spur Guest Ranch outside Bandera in Texas. We arrived around midday, just in time for lunch. Signed our waivers, dropped our bags in a cosy, rustic cabin, then had a feast. There was a big scrapbooking group there for the weekend spread out through the lodge. Funny.

We went and saddled up straight after lunch with six others and the ranch manager, Jay, as guide. It was fabulous! So peaceful and relaxing, but fun at the same time. On the drive up I had been lethargic, irritable and emotional. We got on the horses and I almost instantly felt better. We rode trails up in the hills, walking and trotting in the sunshine. Couldn't stop smiling!

Fresh air, 20 degrees, on these powerful but gentle horses out in nature, no internet... So relaxing. No thinking! We spent the afternoon riding our horses, napping in the cabin, eating our meals at scheduled times, playing table tennis and pool, and sitting on the porch in the sun in rocking chairs. We also jumped in the back of a hay wagon and drove out to the paddock to feed longhorn cows.

At dinner we met a couple from San Antonio, Charlie and Kathi, who were in the area for the night to do some hiking in the nearby national park. They come up twice a month, hike 10 miles, then drive back the same day, but this time they decided to stay overnight and have a few drinks. We had dinner with them, shared their wine and scotch, and ended up sitting with them until midnight. The four of us got through three bottles of wine, a few beers each, and Justin and Charlie finished a small bottle of Beam. We talked about everything from the best places to go in Texas to gun control in Australia and the USA. Charlie, being Texan, is pro-guns and even took Justin to his cabin to show him his gun (he he!). Charlie and Kathi have been married 34 years and they go away every year for their wedding anniversary.
