The ancient enemies of the Navajos were the Pueblo (Anasazi). They inhabited the more forgiving highlands of the Mesa Verde in nearby Colorado.  They too, have left an indelible impression upon the lands which they resided, although where they subsequently went, remains somewhat a mystery.
Here atop the Green Table the Peubloans lived a more settled life, though no less mysterious.  They farmed corn, beans and squash on the flats and initially built simple pit houses of clay and stone.  Yet at some point in their settlement a mass migration was made to the cliff faces.  Here they constructed extra-ordinary dwellings between the alcoves of rock. Entire villages were constructed of stone quarried from above and below. Here they lived their entire lives, clambering up sheer sides and traipsing along the edges of their crops.  Their lives although not terribly ancient, seem so foreign to that which we live.  Mysterious too, is their eventual exit from these dwellings.  Conjecture could me made as to why, but I found it far more engrossing to imagine their lives here.  The verdant gorges, expansive views of the canyon, the acrobatic and enigmatic lives of its occupants make for more magic than most literatu

Thanks for you response to my former comment. Once again I am so impressed. Your photography of the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley is top notch. I have visited 47 of our 50 states and you have done a great job of getting beyond scratching the surface of the USA, which is no small task. It has taken me decades That dust blowing across the road in one of your pictures brought back some memories of driving through Navaho country for me. Your reverence of the items in the Air and Space museum was very touching. I felt the same awe in seeing those relics up close and once again it is very refreshing to see a youngster so interested. Rock and Roll to Mesa Verde. You are in the groove young man. My son and I have done DC, Boston and Philly and the Grand Canyon has got to be at the top of the to do list. He needs to see it and I need to see it again. Something to look forward to. Be well and good luck in your travels.
