So after multiple false starts, here I was at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. The lights dim, the sound of drums rang crisply and the familiar wail of the Baboon came.  Then, magic.  The imagination is an odd creature, unpredictable in how it responds to what is presented in the living world. The Lion King gave my imagination the greatest stimulation it has ever received. I was never particularly enamored by the Disney film, finding it too literal and simplistic.  At least least there was the enjoyable music.  The show transformed my opinion.  Drum beats came to life amongst the awe of the audience and the visual construction was stunning in its attention to detail.  Every prop and costume was used their the most effective way to capture the essence of the story and setting and grip the audience into the African savannah.  The coup-de-grace was a moment where the starlit background crystallised into the image of Mufasa.  In that brief moment, it seemed that all my own whorling thoughts and questions had crystallised.
Aside from this, these last days since my return have been lackadaisical.   There was a few hours soaking up some sun near the pond at Central Park, a few more through the brick-a-brack of Hell's Kitchen Flea Market and then some more through the old High Line.  At these quiet escapes I saw New York I thought had not existed, where one can go about his life, forgetting the rabble around him.
These asides provided me with time and energy to continue with my food odyssey.  A left turn into the streets of Chinatown revealed to me Prosperity Dumpling.  This is quite literally, a hole in the wall.  No tables or chairs, just a ordering counter and a line that stretched onto the street.  Ten fried dumplings, one bowl of soup, an awful mess and three dollars later I was off again.  In the East Village is the ever popular Katz's Delicatessen.  Made famous by Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally" it is also known for its extraordinary pastrami sandwich.  I was sceptical of the claim upon such a simple ingredient but I was a changed man after tasting.  The meat was deliciously smoked with faintest sprinkle of pepper and unbelievably moist. I was spellbound.  It was a slice of heaven between slices of bread.
