Where I stayed

So I arrived gloomy, dark and freezing cold. Gotham City.  Even with the intractable weather there was a certain magic energy, like something mysterious and brooding in the night. I braved it and headed for my hostel which was surprisingly simple given the complexity of the subway system, at least after I had figured out how to get through turnstiles with a suitcase.
The hostel was a large and happening place, with people from all around buzzing through the halls despite the time. Before long I had settled in and met fellow travellers, it would seem this is not a city to be alone in.  The next morning I made for Times Square.  Though not as grand or crowded as I had imagined (perhaps I had only imagined it on new year's eve), it was nonetheless filled with liveliness. Times Square may not be the most important place in the city but certainly beat like its heart.
From there I walked toward the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).  The walk slightly detoured but I was amazed at the defiant beauty of the buildings, each more grand than the last.  Rockerfeller, Chrysler, Grand Central had only existed as names without meaning before.  I can definitely see how walking through here can evoke the kind of emotion that feeds the minds of artists and musicians.  MoMA itself was disgustingly packed, I guess for good reason.  It contained within a truly comprehensive collection of modern masterpieces and the exhibits were neatly designed to allow a clear journey through what must have been the most liberating and dynamic period in art history.
Eventually the challenge of viewing these paintings wore thin my energy.  Exhausted, I retreated home.  There having found some company, we finished our night with some dirty water dogs, by the sidewalk.
