This is a trip into ancient history. We go downtown and see the famous cathedral. Remember Thomas Becket?

He was murdered here by men of his 'best friend', King Henry II in 1170.

Instead of a walking tour we spend pleasant 2 hours - in a beer pub. There we meet quite a cross section of English people. The pub is a stone throw from the Cathedral where everybody is a tourist or tourist guide but here the patrons seem to be all local folk.
Mothers with children, office people on a liquid lunch, welfare bums - all enjoy some of the 10 kinds of brew on tap. There is no smoking inside but a few tables and chairs on the sidewalk have ashtrays and are always busy.

The next stop is Walmer Castle, one of the five artillery fortresses along the coast.

On the way back to the ship we pass the Dover Castle. We don't go in. (I suspect it is full of electronic detection devices)

Back on the ship I go to the library and re-read some of the Canterbury Tales.
