It was another beautiful morning, so Liz and I nipped out (reasonably) early to the Griffith Observatory, which is just a 10 minute drive from the flat. The views over LA are stunning -the whole city is laid out before you in all its bustling glory....yet up at the Observatory all is peace and calm. The green-ness of the surrounding hills added to the tranquility, as did the snow-capped peaks of the mountains to the south.

We were meeting Juliette at the flat at 10am, so after a brief wander around we headed back to commence a very eclectic itinerary. Firstly, the Gardens of Oz! One of Juliette's friends is a "key-holder" for a private peace garden in the Hollywood hills! She had very kindly agreed to let us in to have a look around (unfortunately no photos are allowed, so I will do my best to describe in words). The garden is a collaborative work of a number of women who wanted to "give something back to society", the result of which is this "peace garden", made with thousands of pieces of old pottery, glass, figurines, baubles, etc, etc. The key theme is the Wizard of Oz (for some reason), so there is a "yellow brick road" and various other references to the film. I think "kitsch" probably describes it.....although I'm sure for some it is a very emotive location full of peaceful significance!

After the gardens we headed further into the hills to the "bat caves".....in other words, caves which acted as the location for numerous film and tv shoots, including the Batman tv series. The caves themselves are not necessarily very impressive, but the location in the hills above LA was rather peaceful, and we had a very pleasant walk past various spots where Juliette leads her meditation classes!!

After this we headed up Franklin Avenue for brunch at the 101 Coffee Shop, which is a rather trendy bar/cafe on the ground floor of a hotel in Hollywood. The place was buzzing, but we were served very quickly - which was just as well as by now we were all rather hungry. Liz and I tested out the difference in our eggs (sunny side up v. over easy!).

We are now back at the flat, readying ourselves for a trip to Pasadena. The plan is to eat out in the Old Town and then repair to Juliette & Morteza's flat to celebrate the new year, followed by a trip to see the Rose Parade tomorrow morning. More news to follow in 2013!
