I was very glad I wasn't travelling in the opposite direction, as the M5 northbound was chocker, with mile after mile of stationary traffic heading home after the holidays. The journey to Torquay was uneventful, luckily. On reaching the ground, however, I was surprised to learn that the kick off was delayed by 10 minutes to allow the locals to get there - apparently there had been a pitch inspection at 2pm, and the home fans had been waiting on the outcome of the inspection before leaving home
The game was largely forgettable, apart from two incidents - firstly, our goal (which won the match), and secondly a rather odd incident about ten minutes after the full time whistle. At the end I had loitered around to take some piccies of the subs warming down....in fact, I think I was pretty much the last Albion fan in the ground. Our subs had been running from one side of the pitch to the other on the half way line. After doing this about a dozen times they seemed to get into a slanging match with some Torquay fans on the far side. The stewards legged it over to the far side and a few of the players were led away by some of the others - I was too far away to see any detail, but the Argus has a brief report stating that Davies and Bennett had been racially abused. There was also apparently some racially motivated abuse during the game aimed at Dickinson and Hoyte, which I didn't hear. Rather unsavoury, anyway.
Back home, we ate Liz's Basque Chicken, and lit three more Chinese Lanterns in the garden as it was such a beautiful, clear, crisp and calm evening!
