Where I stayed
In the morning, we caught the bus to the airport, where we picked up our hire car (a Chevy Impala!) that we would be keeping with us until the end of our trip in November. We jumped in and headed west on I-70, straight for the Rocky Mountains. Our plan was to take 2-3 days travelling south on the 285, through Colorado to Santa Fe in New Mexico.
The scenery was more spectacular than we imagined (see photos). It was great to be out on the open road, away from the cities, travelling through snow-capped mountains, thousands of feet above sea-level.
We stopped for lunch at Leadville, a picturesque ex-gold-mining town, before heading on to our destination - Buena Vista. Staying in Buena Vista was purely based on it being a three and a half hour drive from Denver, but when we got there we were pleasantly surprised and our room had views of the mountains. We went out for dinner at a restaurant next door and then returned back to our motel to get some well earned rest before continuing on the next day. It felt great to have finally begun the roadtrip part of our journey and we were feeling excited about the adventures yet to come!
