03/10/2009 - Headed down to 'Bud n' Mary's Marina' to buy some bait so that Jim could finally go fishing. Borrowed a rod from the resort office and off Jim went to the end of the pier (meanwhile I swam in the pool). Whilst fishing, Jim made a new friend...fish-mad Fred from Alabama. He is a real character and took great pleasure in taking Jim under his wing (they have been inseparable ever since). Unfortunately, the fish weren't biting, so Jim returned home empty-handed, but at least with a new best friend.

We had a wicked night out that evening at 'The Full Moon Party', held on a beach a mile up the road on Florida bayside. A few people from our resort had travelled down to Islamorada from Miami just for the party. As well as a live reggae band and a bbq, there were fire jugglers, carnival dancers and at the end of the night a fireworks display on the water. It was like nothing we had been to before. The atmosphere was really cool and everyone had a great time.

04/10/2009 - After a lie-in, we spent the morning by the pool chatting to some of the other guests staying at the resort, including a couple of blokes from England. In the afternoon we both went down to the pier (shortly followed by Fred) to try our luck at fishing again. Fred kindly gave Jim some fishing tackle to use as the rod from reception was not that well equipped. Jim quickly caught a small snapper, which he put in the keep-net for Fred to use later for shark bait! After some more tips from Fred, Jim had a go at 'spinning' for the snapper and promptly caught another, which this time Fred grabbed, chopped its head off whilst it was still flapping (see video, Fred is the big bald guy with a beard), and then handed to Jim to use as bait for larger fish such as tarpon. We had such a good time on the pier, one of our best days yet.

We returned back to our cottage early evening for a bbq and a few beers out on the veranda. The perfect ending to the perfect day. Not quite the end for Jim though, he has a date with a certain someone (not me) for some nighttime fishing.....
