Well what about a USA Road trip vacation? Some facts for those who always ask - how much??
We drove 5680 miles, 9141k at a cost of $650 in fuel. When we needed fuel we pulled into the nearest gas station, we didn't look at the price or join any discount groups, the going price seemed to be about $3 a gallon.
Motels cost us $3330 for 40 nights, including a 6 night splurge ( for us anyway) in Las Vegas. Now we certainly didn't stay in the cheapest motels available, but we found that Super 8 and the Days Inn chains fitted what we wanted.
Airfares are what you can get them for!!! same as car hire, but between $1600 to $2000 for 42 days, for a full size. Food is cheap, breakfast at the motels for free was good enough for us, but dinner depends entirely on how expensive your tastes are,but we certainly didn't spend anymore than our housekeeping bill would have been at home. Then there are the extras of your choice!! believe me a 45 minute chopper flight over the Grand Canyon is not exactly cheap, but my tip is its not worth going there if you don't do it!
How does a USA Road trip compare to a European Motor home vacation? They are entirely different experiences. We love driving and that is the integral part of the road trip , driving and seeing the scenery which is incredible in the USA, at least where we drove ,if you don't like driving you don't like a road trip, it is not so destination orientated as in Europe. The motel and car hire was definitely the right choice for what we did, we could not have covered the territory we did in any kind of motor home, and the USA is not as geared up for the camper van holiday as Europe is, and saying that if we ever traveled Europe again it would be in a small camper van.
Which holiday was best? you will have to see where we go next time eh!! and you will be waiting a loooong time. We are BROKE!! Must have been all those slots in Vegas!!!
