A capital is the town or city that is the seat of government and a capitol is the actual building or buildings. So Jackson is the capital of the State of Mississippi and the capitol building is located on Mississippi Street. They say you learn something new every day!

Jackson located 45 miles east of Vicksburg. It too saw the ravages of the Civil War, as it burned 3 times after the Yanks came through. We wanted to see the Old Capitol Museum, the new capitol and the governor's mansion. Downtown Jackson is compact so we were able to walk to everything.

The Old Capitol is now a great museum. We have gone to quite a few while in the South and either they require no admittance fee or are very inexpensive. During the Civil War the capitol served as a hospital so it was spared wrath of the Union soldiers. It did suffer some wind and rain damage from Hurricane Katrina, however.

The new Capitol was completed in 1903 as the old building was outgrown after 70 years of service.
It is four times larger. We visited while the legislature was in session. Jil wanted to see what their chambers looked like and was stopped by security so as not to interrupt the proceedings. A lady legislator happened to notice, asked where Jil was from and said "Come on in. It would be a shame to come all that way and not see our beautiful building!" She took advantage of the lady's political "horsepower" and entered the chamber as an invited guest. How great is that?
